Review: Virtual Villagers 2 The Lost Children

vv2 macVirtual Villagers 2 is the sequel to one of the most famous (and best selling) games ever made for the Mac OS. It was created using PTK, the popular game development library made by Phelios. This sequel continues the story of the first game, even if you can actually play it without having finished (or even played) the first chapter.

You’re in control, once again, of the small tribe of fun villagers in a remote island called “Isola” (which in italian means exactly “Island). It is your task to control the life of each single villager, deciding what he must do, learn, try, and so on. It is really a great sandbox game. Every villager has a set of skills that make it unique, and also adds a sort of “roleplay” element to the game itself, which is always welcome.

vv2 macYou can interact with the background scenery like in the first title, use kids to explore unknown places, doctors and scientist to analyze any new discovering you have made, and so on. It is a persistent world, so even if you don’t play the game, in the background the villagers continue their daily activities. If you leave the game and your villagers don’t have enough food, you can have a unpleasant surprise when you start the game again, if you’ve been away for too long….!

So it’s even a sort of “tamagochi” game, because once you start, you can’t leave the game going on its own for too long, or you’ll have to face the consequences. It is really a game that captures you, in a wonderful world made of blue sea, white sands and lots of discoveries to be made.

order virtual villager macThe only few complaints that can be made to this game, are about minor things, like the scrolling speed not very fast, the need of a zoom-out feature, and the possibility to group more than one villager at once (like you do in many RTS games.

Still, it is a very good game and I recommend anyone owning a mac to try it!
