Review: Universal Boxing Manager
Saturday, June 2nd, 2007
Universal Boxing Manager, as the name says, it’s a boxing management simulation. This kind of sport (boxe) has always been very fascinating for me, and unfortunately mostly ignored by all the software houses, expecially on the mac platform.
The game itself is very small (less than 10mb download) but don’t be fooled, it has plenty of options. It lets you start a new career as a boxing manager, the first step is the creation of your manager choosing his skills: an interesting option is the possibility to start the game with your manager already at advanced age (like 30-35 years). This will let you try what the game would be if you start with already some good reputation, and with 3-4 or more boxers already in your stable.
The best option however is start as a freshly graduated manager of 20 years old with just 1-2 boxers available. The trial version doesn’t let you hire new boxers though, so if you really want to enjoy the thrill of finding new talents you’ll have to get the full version. The trial also has load/save disabled.
Once your manager is created, you can arrange fights with other CPU-controlled boxers. The limit is only the ranking difference, it must not be greater than 5 (so a boxer ranked 99 can’t fight a boxer ranked 90 for example).
The fight itself has 2 options: real-time fight with top-down view, or text mode. The topdown view, albeit simple, is quite exciting to follow, even if probably you’ll want to speed up the time (you have 3 speed settings). The fights in the latest version have been updated greatly and now they’re very realistic and exciting.
As in the real boxing, you can have a very strong fighter who has a crystal mandible, that means that if he doesn’t get hurt too much can make KO almost any opponent. But maybe it’s enough 3-4 good punches to bring him down…
The game is really open-ended. The ultimate goal would be to have all 6 boxers in top10 of any weight class, but this is quite hard. It is one of those games that is fun to play even for 2-3 h a day, even if you don’t reach top10 or anything. Just to watch some good fights between your boxers and the CPU ones.
The game is constantly updated. It was originally released in April 2004, and in those 3 years its features have constantly increased (just an example is the 3d boxers in the management screen).
All in all, a good game for everyone, and a very good game for boxing fans!
