Review: Global Warning
Friday, July 13th, 2007
It’s here. The first and only (as far as I know) game that talk about a hot topic: Global Warming. With a clever naming strategy (Warning instead of Warming) this game plays in a similar was as the famous Kudos game from Positech. But this time isn’t about your alter ego life, or better, not only about it.
It is about the life you’re living right now, and also the lives of millions of humans, animals, and creatures that inhabits the earth nowadays. Because in this game, while playing, you’ll discover the drama of living nearby a giant dump, with all the negative effects you can’t even imagine (unless you are so unlucky to have experienced it first person). Increased pollution, mysterious diseases spreading among the nearby villagers, long queue on the roads and increased traffic because of all those giant trucks delivering the daily trash to the dump.
But in the game, you don’t give up. You fight, for the first time, against everything and everyone that want to destroy our beloved earth. Against politicians that talk but never act, against multinational corporation that ignore the dangers of pursuing a mindless strategy, totally non-environment friendly.
The game itself plays in turns, each turn representing one week. You have 125 weeks or so to solve the dump situation. During that time, you’ll have to make the right decision. Even small daily gestures like turning off the lights when you leave a room, using less water when you take a shower, and so on.
Every little thing counts in the end. The game actually is a huge source of great ideas on how to live in a better world, and what’s even more fun, saving money! yes, because 90% of the ideas in the game, will actually help you to save money in the real life.
Now, how many other games you played did that? how many helped you to save money? Amazing. The game price is very small, less than $10 - which can be considered a good investment. I started to apply the most basic suggestions I found there, and I plan to have a saving of $200 only on electricity, water and heating by the end of this year (just 6 months).
I wish that Midori made this game sooner! I would have saved so much more money….!
